Having worked 11 years on Financial Mail from 1967, ultimately serving as Financial Editor, he also co-founded Finance Week in 1979; fulfilling the role as director until 1995. He was Deputy Editor from 1979 until 1982 and Editor from 1982 until 1995.
A recipient of Afrox and Sanlam awards for financial journalism. He also wrote an unauthorised biography of Sol Kerzner, published by Jonathan Ball, but it was interdicted by Kerzner from distribution.
He was the Managing Director of BDFM (publisher of Business Day and Financial Mail) from 1997 to 2002; and the South African advisor to FTSE for two years to end-December 2004; as well as wrote a regular Business Report column during this period.
Allan launched Today’s Trustee in 2005.
