Dear colleagues, friends and readers
When I wrote to you in August announcing the closure of Today’s Trustee, I believed we had reached the end of a remarkable journey. It was a difficult letter to write, both personally and because I knew what the industry stood to lose.
Today, I am delighted to share news of a new chapter.
An agreement has been reached for Sally Hudson of Stuff Media to acquire Today’s Trustee, securing a way forward for the publication and the independent journalism that has defined its contribution to the retirement-fund industry.
Sally brings 25 years of experience across television, radio and print, together with a strong understanding of the business of publishing and the support of a seasoned editorial team. She has both the experience to guide the magazine’s development and a clear commitment to the editorial values on which its reputation rests. She has my wholehearted support.
For me, this is about much more than securing a future for a publication that bears so much of Allan’s life’s work. It is about ensuring that the principles he established continue to guide it: editorial independence, rigorous journalism, objective analysis and the courage to ask difficult questions.
Sally and her team share that commitment. They understand that Today’s Trustee’s credibility rests on its independence from regulators and service providers, and that its purpose is to inform, challenge, stimulate debate and influence policy in the interest of the millions of South Africans who save through retirement funds.
In keeping with the editorial approach that distinguished Today’s Trustee under Allan’s stewardship, an editorial board of pension-fund experts is being assembled.
Drawing on their knowledge, experience and close understanding of the industry, the board will help inform the magazine’s coverage and bring depth and perspective to its analysis. This connection between independent journalism and expert industry insight has long been a defining strength of Today’s Trustee, and will remain central to its future.
We are aiming to publish the next issue in February 2027. Sally and her team are taking a considered approach to the relaunch, meeting stakeholders and industry representatives and assembling the right team to carry the publication forward.
Three newsletters in the lead-up to the issue will share further developments, including more about the editorial board and the magazine’s plans.
For the past 20 years, our clients and advertisers have helped make Today’s Trustee’s journalism possible. That support remains essential to the magazine’s return and to sustaining its independent contribution to the retirement-fund industry.
As this next chapter takes shape, Sally would welcome the opportunity to reconnect with longstanding clients and advertisers, hear your perspectives on the publication’s role in the industry and discuss how you might participate in its future. Your relationship with Today’s Trustee is valued, and I warmly encourage you to begin that conversation with her.
As planning for the February issue gets under way, I also ask you to renew your advertising commitment to Today’s Trustee. An early indication of your support will help the team plan with confidence and secure the foundation needed to publish the next issue—ensuring that the industry continues to benefit from the informed scrutiny, insight and debate that have always been the magazine’s hallmark.
I believe deeply in what Allan built and in Sally and her team’s commitment to carrying it forward. I hope you will join me in supporting them as they begin this new chapter.
Warm regards,
Riana Greenblo
